Mid Century Modern
If you missed the Robin and Lucienne Day retrospective at Pallant House Gallery, don’t worry—you can now see the collection of wonderful furniture and textiles by the first couple of design at the PM Gallery in Ealing, West London.
Rewind to 1951 and the Festival of Britain: the Days are rising to prominence on the crest of a wave of postwar optimism—Robin with his seminal furniture design for the Royal Festival Hall and Lucienne with her innovative, abstract textile designs. In 1951 there was a feeling that design could make the world a better place and you can still feel this energy when you look at the couple’s work today. Optimism characterised their output for decades and, though both the Days departed this world last year, it will no doubt go on inspiring like- minded designers for a long time to come.
