White Cube: Gilbert & George
The newspaper seller’s poster greets travellers at every tube station. The design never seems to have changed, and the headlines have been more or less interchangeable ever since the mass newspaper market was created.
Gilbert & George have acquired 3712 newspaper posters, and transformed them into the 292 works which make up London Pictures, an exhibition opening across all three White Cube galleries from 9th March.
Burglar steals wads of fake cash. Search for mystery naked reveller. Tube bomb travel chaos. The same words printed out everywhere, slyly mapping out the world about us. And behind the headlines – the net curtains, with Gilbert and George staring out at the viewer.
